Building a website for your small business is a crucial element of creating a brand. In 2024 more than ever most business owners are moving toward website builder softwares such as squarespace, wordpress and wix for template websites. This is super beneficial for those who need quality online presence without design knowhow. Many small businesses however are learning to stand out more effectively with the creative touch of working with a designer.

I've worked with many small business's while they are developing their online presence and a common theme is that they don't always see the value this will add and therefor want to cut corners. It is my advice to never underestimate the value of a well formed website.

Sites like WIX, Squarespace and Wordpress are amazing tools for anyone who wants to build a new website. They have democratized the world once restricted to those who speak in computer code. From start to finish you might be able to take a few photos, some copy and have a published website within hours. An amazing resource to say the least. These tools, just like any other technology, are restricted in their scope. Beauty and ease of use are not the only elements which make an effective website. Website builders fall short in offering strategies to follow. There are no template for creating an effective marketing strategy to grow your client or customer base. So if you are using a WYSIWYG site builder make sure you pay attention to the big picture of guiding your audience to you.

In America small businesses fail in a five year period at a rate of almost 70%. Largely it is my belief that this is because those businesses fail to observe and interact with the needs of both their customers and their competitors. It's really hard to figure out what your audience wants. Standing out can be difficult and keeping up can be even more difficult. These are some of the reasons why template based website builders have become so effective. Most people do not see the value in investing more heavily in their online presence when cheaper, great looking options exist. This may be a trap though if you do not utilize creative marketing strategy. I always recommend at least consulting with someone who has a design or marketing perspective before calling a project complete.

Diving deeper into the longevity of small businesses it is my belief that some of the most successful small businesses are those who masterfully utilize social media, online campaigns and customer engagement. Creating a community around your brand can help your customers not only find you but hang out long enough to tell their friends. Since everyone seems to be hanging out online these days, that might be the best place to position yourself for success. We can hangout online together!
